I’m Going On An Adventure

“I am going on an adventure”. Bilbo Baggins excitedly announces this as he runs down the lane in the classic book, The Hobbit. And this is how I feel right now as we get ready to embark on an adventure that was a lifetime in the making. I cannot contain my elation and anticipation. Rick and I have talked about this idea for 40 years. The idea of Living Seasonally in our favorite locations around the world.

We have always experienced wanderlust, and when we married, we planned two vacation trips each year. After our daughters were born, we continued traveling with them, from road trips to world wide exploration.

As we moved and lived in regions around the States, we began to realize that we would have the best world if we could live in Colorado in the summer, New Hampshire in the fall, Florida in the winter, and North Carolina in the spring. As we wandered through countries around the world, we also discovered that we fell in love with foreign locations that captured our soul.

We talked repeatedly about living seasonally someday where we would dive into a location for an extended period of time during what we considered to be their best season of the year.

As we take stock of items in our home, we made a conscious decision to store some treasures based on possible needs in the future. How does one choose what should be saved and stored?

Why do we hold onto “things” ? We love them and want to touch them. A wave of nostalgia and love wash over me when I page through the photo books of my children. I remember each moment with such passion that I can be moved to tears. The same happens when I hold the sugar bowl from my grandmother’s pottery collection. I am transported back in her kitchen as an eight year old, sitting at the table as Grandma scoops a heaping spoonful of sugar into the coffee cup she lovingly hands me. And I smile as a tear runs down my face. Yes, I have to keep that sugar bowl. I don’t care what you say.

Now it’s time to leave on that adventure. I cannot wait to live seasonally.

Stiamo andando in un’avventura!
