Eating gelato in front of the Pantheon in Rome
Rome Gelato Gratifications
When you are in Italy, you must eat gelato every day and the very best is:
1. Not adjacent to any tourist location. They are tucked in alleys where the locals know where to visit. So go search out the best.
2. Not the bright colored swirled concoctions you see through the glass. That gelato has pumped in color to catch your attention, not your taste buds.
Otaleg – Is gelato spelled backward and you have to try their salty hazelnut crunch gelato. Viale dei Colli Portuensi, 594.
Fatamorgana – Tucked in little corners all over the city, this is a local chain of gelato shops which feature unusual taste combinations. Someone wrote about their baklava. I have to try this one next trip. Via Roma Libera, 11 in Trastevere and Via dei Chiavari, 37 by Campo dei Fiori.
I Caruso – Although they have only a few flavors, whatever is available is delicious. Known for the pistachio, they make a mean strawberry in season. Deep red and juicy, you think you are eating a bowl of fresh picked strawberries. Via Collina, 13.
Neve di Latte – We read about this one and put it on my map. Amadei chocolate and milk from the Piedmonte give their gelato a creaminess and smoothness that is irresistible. Found close to Piazza del Popolo, this is a great stop after wandering the Borghese Gallery. Via Luigi Poletti, 6.
