Indian Paintbrushes and the State Flower, the Texas Bluebonnet, carpet the road sides in the spring

Taking a road trip to the Texas Hill Country for a birthday weekend, we stumbled upon a few delicious Secrets.

Fredericksburg, Texas was settled in 1846, and you can feel the authentic German soul and view the reminders of their European heritage in the historic buildings along Main Street. The people are welcoming and the German cuisine aromas emanate from several restaurants. From art galleries and cute boutiques to the fifty wineries clustered around the town, Fredericksburg is the epicenter of Texas Wine Country. You can hike Enchanted Rock or take photos of the colorful carpet of spring wildflowers lining the county roads. Succulent summer peaches ooze flavor at outdoor stands as you meander to the local biergartens. The town is just charming.

 

Peach Tree Inn & Suites was our lodging choice and this was a surprising discovery. For the cost of the night, we had a cabin with a kitchen and outdoor seating and firepit. We were greeted with cookies at check in, and on any warm day, one can walk the two blocks to the main street in town to eat and shop.

The Auslander was our German dining site and I needed three bowls of their special red cabbage. It was a taste sensation. Walls were filled with images of German towns, including several that Rick and I have discovered. We devoured their Schweineschnitzel, a lightly breaded pork loin with German potato salad.

Our morning found us at the Old German Bakery & Restaurant where we indulged in the German pancake which filled the entire fourteen inch plate. With a consistency of a crepe suzette, this pancake was not on our keto diet. But it’s a birthday treat !

We drove through Luckenbach to visit the dancehall and snapped photos of Lyndon Baines Johnson gravesite on his ranch, snapping the ubiquitous Texas longhorn steer.
